Veterinary Thermal Imaging

Abnormal body temperature is more often than not a sign of disease or underlying problems in animals, and infrared imaging is a quick way to pick up abnormal surface temperatures. While thermography may not be able to tell you the cause of the heat signature, it’s enough to indicate a problem that doesn’t immediately present itself and is useful in conjunction with other checkups and diagnostic tests. However, heat can also be a sign of inflammation, which should be quickly treated and the root cause of the inflammation identified.

 

An infrared camera can also be used for a myriad of other tests. Heat signatures can be used to detect pregnancy in animals, test the effects of feed on an animal, and it’s particularly popular for detecting sore spots in horses and measuring their stress levels. Thermology can also be used after an animal has undergone treatment, particularly surgery, to monitor their healing and watch for any potential side effects. Inflammation, infections, internal bleeding and fractures will produce a heat signature, all of which will require further treatment.

 

While capturing veterinary thermal imaging is one thing, interpreting them and coming up with a diagnosis is another. Your thermal inspector will work hand in hand with veterinary specialists to inspect an animal and come to a diagnosis.
